"The Ka-22 is not a conventional airplane, but a Soviet experimental transverse-rotor gyrodyne (compound helicopter) developed by the Kamov Design Bureau in the 1950s. The aircraft combined the features of both a helicopter and an airplane: it took off and landed vertically, while in horizontal flight it utilized its wing to generate lift and conventional propellers for forward thrust."
