facts: In 1934, the New York Central took one of its powerful J-1e Hudson locomotives (No. 5344) and enclosed it in a futuristic, bathtub-like streamlined casing to reduce wind resistance. Named the Commodore Vanderbilt (after the founder of the railroad), it was assigned to the pride of the fleet:

• The Route: It spent its working life pulling high-speed, luxury passenger trains along the New York Central's famous "Water Level Route" between New York City and Chicago.

• The Train: Its most famous assignment was the western leg of the legendary Twentieth Century Limited, frequently running the stretches through Ohio, Indiana, and into Chicago.

Because it was a one-of-a-kind experimental design, it didn't stay in this exact configuration forever. By 1945, the New York Central removed the heavy streamlined shrouding, and No. 5344 spent the rest of its days looking like a standard Hudson locomotive until it was retired and scrapped in 1953.
