WARNING, USE OF THE COPYCATS+ AERONAUTICS WEIGHT MOD IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. FLIGHT CEILING WILL BE REDUCED TO ~270 BLOCKS OTHERWISE.
Welcome to the Sailfin, a fast and easy to control hybrid helicopter designed to work on the Gearworks SMP. It minimises add-ons used, primarily using Copycats for decoration & diesel generators for power.
Boasting a large fuel tank, the powerful Sailfin is capable of extreme extended flights with a top speed of ~85 m/s and flight ceiling of 300 blocks.
The Sailfin is very easy to fly, using the simple hover craft control scheme of Forward, Reverse, and Yaw.
=== Usage Instructions ===
To build the Sailfin, first print the schematic without applying any rotation or mirroring. Then verify the following:
The entire craft is encased in in Honey Glue
All 3 propellers are individually encased in Slime Glues (not including the propeller bearing itself)
The 2 pairs of tilt mechanisms on either side are correctly encased in Slime Glues. The 1st segments include everything except the blue decorative panes & the propellers (which is connected in-line to the 2nd swivel bearings). The 2nd segments simply connects the blue decorative wing panes to the propeller.
Please apply the glues if they failed to print for you, and take extra care not to mix up the glue zones for the main props. The craft will be not able to operate correctly if the slime glues intersect incorrectly.
Once verified, attach a contraption assembler to the cockpit area and assemble the vehicle.
Once assembled, make sure to add turbochargers to the diesel engines, accessible via the sides and bottom rear of the aircraft, as indicated by the glowstones.
Additionally, you may need to re-link the cockpit's display links to the dashboard. The Speed & Altitude links are clearly visible, while an additional Engine Braking link is hidden under the cockpit's glowstone flooring.
Finally, you may also want to verify the following but it is not strictly necessary:
The swivel bearings assemble correctly and are all set to "Always Locked"
The propeller bearings assemble correctly
The speed controller inside the rear of the hull, near the portable engine is set to 256 RPM clockwise (you may need to remove some panels to access this)
Engine Fueling and Start Up
Before starting the fueling process, make sure the engine clutch is disengaged via P using the Linked Typewriter, and optionally also increase Engine Brake to maximum via Left Control. The dashboard should display the brake level when seated in the pilot seat. You must also disable the main propeller rotation springs via the levers on top of the two wing nacelles.
Once the engine is disengaged from the powertrain, you can connect the docking connector to any valid liquid fuel source for the diesel engines.
With fuel provided through the docking port, supply some fuel to the portable engine located further towards the tail, hidden behind a vertical sail. You only need a small amount to pump fuel into the diesel engines. Once they start up, they will self-feed and the portable engine is no longer needed.
With the engines running, rotate the main propellers into place by activating the levers on top of the wing nacelles. Lag and other glitches may sometimes cause the props to be rotated into incorrect positions. You can reset them by disabling the levers, re-assembling the swivel bearings, then re-enabling the levers. The torsion springs on the nacelles allow you to customise the exact rotation of the main props. Use with caution as bad settings can induce severe clang, the angles are set to X degrees up from the resting position.
Controls
Using the Linked Typewriter, the Sailfin can be controlled using the following scheme:
WASD for Forward, Reverse, and Yaw (car steering)
Left Shift and Space for main engine brakes
P for main propeller clutch, this cuts power to them but leaves the engines running. Use the lever in the cockpit to shut off the engines when not flying.
Note, the Sailfin has been balanced to ensure fast and steady forward flight. Its reverse is extremely strong and will cause a severe pitch down if held. When slowing down, only gently tap reverse as needed.
REVISION 2 - EMERGENCY HOTFIX
Due to a previously unknown discrepancy in the Diesel Engine configs between the different modpacks used in the design process. The initial iteration of the Sailfin was underpowered for the official Gearworks server configs. A hot fix has been made with REVision 2, adding additional diesel generators to compensate for the halved individual generator performance. The relevant instructions have now been updated.
REVISION 3
Additional modifications have been made to the Sailfin to improve its survival usability and performance without the copycat+ aero weight mod. The max flight ceiling has been increased from 200 to 270 blocks. The end stones can be omitted if you wish to build the Sailfin pre-end, as they only provide minimal lift and can be ignored entirely if so wish.
REVISION 4
Added Handles throughout the craft to enable better maintenance access in survival without jetpacks.
